OLIVE ELEMENTARY IN ORANGE, CALIFORNIA RECOGNIZED AS AVID SHOWCASE SCHOOL

March 14 01:30 2019

Olive Elementary is the first in Orange Unified School District to be named an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Elementary Showcase School. Out of 186 elementary schools currently participating in AVID across Southern California, Olive is only the sixth elementary school to reach this accolade. They will serve as a model for implementation of the AVID College Readiness System at the elementary level. Olive Elementary implements AVID to promote college readiness in kindergarten students up through sixth grade.

This month, Olive Elementary students and teachers will have the opportunity to model their AVID success to educators from around Southern California during an AVID Showcase visit. AVID Showcases help educators to see successful AVID structures and strategies in a school setting while also sharing best practices and gaining hands-on experience. The Showcase program experience will include classroom observations and a chance to speak with experienced AVID teachers, administrators, and students at Olive Elementary.

Following her visit to the school, Regional AVID Director Traci Grove noted that every classroom was implementing AVID strategies consistently and that student engagement levels were very high.

OUSD first began offering AVID classes to middle and high school students and expanded the program to the elementary level during the 2015-16 school year. Offering AVID at the elementary level is not always common among AVID-practicing districts. AVID places special emphasis on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading skills.
