Safe2Drive Driving School, a premiere driving school based in Surrey, BC, and serving the Surrey, Delta, White Rock, Burnaby, Langley and Vancouver areas, recently shared some useful tips in their recent blog on how parents and drivers can make sure that children stay safe as they return to school after the 2018 winter break.

“Every year, six children die walking or riding their bikes in the Province according to ICBC,” said Sharan Binning, Safe2Drive Driving School media representative. “What’s more, 7,900 drivers received tickets for speeding within school and playground zones. We believe that if parents and drivers follow these simple tips, they can help make a difference in our community and eliminate the senseless loss of life and grave injuries to minors that occur on our streets annually.”

“The law states that, during every school day, and unless otherwise posted, a 30 km/h speed limit is in effect in school zones from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. The same speed limit applies daily in playground zones, from dusk until dawn. Drivers need to make sure they have allotted adequate time in their schedule for their commuting, as rushing leads to speeding, which, in turn, causes accidents. It is important that drivers adhere to the imposed speed limits, and pay close attention to their surroundings. A small child may be hidden from their view and be hurt as they back up their car; a hockey net or ball might indicate the presence of a child that might dash in the street at any moment. Vigilance is crucial and must be exercised at all times.”

“With regards to driving within a school zone, drivers must keep in mind the following: at drop-off, parents must ensure that their child exits the vehicle on the side closest to the sidewalk, and never allow them to cross mid-block. Stopped vehicles in front of or beside them might indicate that they are yielding to a pedestrian, so drivers need to proceed with caution and be prepared to stop. The same applies for school buses – should they see a school bus with flashing lights, vehicles approaching from both directions are mandated to stop. All in all, following these simple tips will help make our children safer, and the driver experience easier for all.”
